Significant wildfires still ravage several parts of Russia. On Wednesday, the Republic of Karelia, on the border with Finland, declared a state of emergency.

As a result, the state of emergency is already in effect in ten regions throughout Russia.

The worst affected region is the Siberian Republic of Yakutia, in the Far East. There alone, some 745,000 hectares are on fire, while the fire is still expanding on Wednesday, according to the Russian agency responsible for forest fires.

In Russia, authorities allow almost all wildfires, except those near populated areas, to burn themselves out because the country is so vast and the costs are too high.
