WHO Warns: Pandemic Will Not Be Over Until Corona is Under Control in Every Country
The end of the global corona pandemic is not yet in sight. WHO director Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned about this at the annual meeting of the health organization.
“We have to be very clear: the Covid-19 pandemic is not over and will not be over until the transmission (of the virus) is under control in every country.”
The number of new corona cases in Europe has decreased by 60 percent in the past month. The WHO “welcomes this,” said Ghebreyesus in his speech. “But worldwide, we remain in a vulnerable situation,” he adds quickly. “No country should assume it is out of the fire, regardless of vaccination coverage.”
There are still hot spots of the coronavirus in several European countries, which can flare up quickly and cause new waves. The WHO fears that more transport, more physical contacts and more meetings could lead to more infections in the coming months. Everything stands or falls with the pace of the vaccination process, says Ghebreyesus.
The director-general, therefore, calls on governments to donate corona vaccines to Covax, an international program that makes vaccines available to poorer countries. By doing this, the WHO hopes that 30 percent of the world’s total population can be vaccinated by the end of 2021.
