The US Congress will consider unidentified flying objects known as UFOs on Tuesday. In fact, for the first time in decades, there will be a hearing on the subject in the House of Representatives Subcommittee on Counter-Terrorism, Counterintelligence and Arms Control.

According to media reports, several senior Defense Department officials are to answer questions. A private hearing will follow a public portion.

Congress hasn’t held a public hearing on UFOs in more than 50 years, said Democratic committee chairman Andr√© Carson. “Americans need to know more about these unexplained events.”

Last year, government officials of the Unidentified Aerial Phenomena Task Force submitted to Congress a declassified version of a top-secret report on the subject. It was a document prepared by the Ministry of Defense in conjunction with intelligence agencies.

According to the Department of Defence, the task force was created to “discover, analyze and catalogue unexplained aerial phenomena that may pose a threat to US national security” according to the Department of Defense. The cause was striking phenomenon that pilots of the US Navy, among others, said they had observed in the past 20 years.
