The new abortion law is causing a stir in the US state of Texas and far beyond. A website has been set up that denounces people who ‘help’ with an abortion.

A protest movement against the site has started on the social networking site TikTok. TikTokkers bombard the site with fake alerts, memes of the cartoon character Shrek and porn.

In the US state of Texas, a controversial law came into effect on Wednesday that bans abortion as soon as a heartbeat can be detected in the fetus. That is usually around the sixth week, and many women do not know that they are pregnant yet. No exception is made for victims of rape or incest.

In Texas, people are also being urged to report to court anyone who assists women in performing an abortion after the sixth week. This concerns, for example, pro-abortion organizations but also ordinary citizens who offer financial support or, for example, take a woman to an abortion clinic. A website has been set up where people can tell such helpers. Women’s rights activists are very concerned about that website and warn of manhunts.

On the social networking platform TikTok, users have launched a campaign to ridicule the snitch website. TikTok users are sending false notifications to the site in droves. One TikTok user says he has made no fewer than 742 false reports about Texas Republican Governor Greg Abbott, who allegedly helped women perform abortions. There are also massive numbers of Shrek memes and pornographic images posted on the site.

The TikTokkers hope in this way to crash the site and keep the attention on the topic. US President Joe Biden has also spoken out against the law. He says he will continue to fight for women’s rights.
