Snake Island Bombed Around Ukrainian Flag

The Russian army says it bombed Ukraine’s Snake Island on the day the Ukrainian flag was ceremonially raised. That happened after the bombing on Thursday morning.

The flag was raised for the first time since the island was taken back by Ukraine. That happened with some ceremony and the moment was shared by Ukraine on social media.

“Part of the Ukrainian branch on the island has been destroyed,” the Russian defence ministry said in a statement after the bombing. Russia said the island was abandoned last week as a sign of goodwill to return grain to the Black Sea. Ukraine claimed to have conquered the island through persistent attacks.

Snake Island is just offshore, south of Odessa. Its location allows the country that controls the island to control access to Ukraine’s largest port cities.
