Romanian Arrested for Involvement in England Death Truck

Romania has arrested a man suspected of involvement in a people-smuggling case that led to the deaths of 39 Vietnamese migrants.

The Vietnamese were found suffocated in October 2019 in a refrigerated truck that had been shipped from Belgium to Great Britain.

The United Kingdom had issued an arrest warrant for the 48-year-old Romanian who was arrested on Wednesday. He is suspected of manslaughter and aiding illegal migration. A court in Bucharest will determine whether he will be extradited.

More than 25 people have already been convicted in the case in Belgium and England. The two leaders of the smugglers’ gang have been sentenced to 27 and 20 years in prison. Two drivers of the truck also received long prison terms.
