The Johnson & Johnson vaccine protects well against severe illness and death from Covid-19. That reports the American regulator FDA.

According to the FDA, the vaccine is 72 percent effective in the US. Only one dose of the vaccine should be administered.

In South Africa, where a more contagious variant is circulating, the vaccine is 64 percent effective, the FDA said in its report. In the US, the vaccine is 86 percent effective against serious illness; in South Africa, it is 82 percent.

That means a vaccinated person is much less likely to end up in the hospital or die from Covid-19, according to the New York Times newspaper. The vaccine may also limit the spread of the virus.

The regulator independently studied the results of clinical tests on approximately 40,000 people in different countries. Taking all regions together, 28 days after injection, the vaccine is 85.4 percent effective against severe forms of the disease and 66.1 percent against moderate conditions of COVID-19.

According to the FDA, there is a safe profile of the vaccine with no specific concerns.
