Free Corona Self-Tests for Austrians From March 1
There will be no further easing in Austria before Easter. As Chancellor Sebastian Kurz promised, free self-tests in pharmacies for all Austrians from March 1.
Austria does not want to implement further easing of the corona measures until Easter at the earliest. The government plans to decide on this on March 1 after consulting with experts.
“At the earliest, from today’s perspective, we expect further opening steps around Easter,” said Chancellor Sebastian Kurz (ÖVP).
According to Kurz, the infection situation is still stable a week ago despite slight loosening. “But we are struggling with the fact that the mutations have increased and are still increasing.” A week ago, all shops, hairdressers and other body-friendly service providers in Austria had reopened.
Kurz referred to the millions of tests that are designed to keep what is happening under control. A negative corona test is required to visit the newly opened service providers. The country now wants to focus even more on tests. From March 1, self-tests can be collected from pharmacies free of charge.
The regional head of Styria, Hermann Schützenhöfer (ÖVP), emphasized: “If we test, test, test – then that is the alternative to lockdown.” The hotels and restaurants that have been closed for months are waiting for an opening perspective.
