Former Vice President Suriname Ashwin Adhin Arrested

Former vice president of Suriname Ashwin Adhin was picked up from home by the police on Monday to be questioned as a suspect.


This was announced during a session of the Surinamese parliament.

Adhin was Vice President in the previous government headed by President Desi Bouterse and is now a Member of Parliament.

According to Member of Parliament Reshma Mangre, the arrest has to do with the destruction of media equipment in the cabinet of current Vice President Ronnie Brunswijk.

Adhin is a member of the faction of the National Democratic Party (NDP) of Bouterse.

President Chan Santokhi, who attended the parliament meeting, said that Adhin had been detained in the interest of the investigation.
