The European Commission has retained a contract for the delivery of more than 20 million rapid tests worth 100 million euros.

The so-called antigen tests of the pharmaceuticals Roche and Abbott will be available from the beginning of January, the daily EU board reports.

The committee has also prepared a recommendation to the 27 Member States on constant use, approval and mutual recognition of rapid tests. EU Commissioner Stella Kyriakides (Public Health) said: “The antigen tests are fast, reliable and help to isolate Covid-19 cases quickly.

This is crucial to slow the pandemic. Testing will remain fundamental in the coming months, even if we start from December 27, roll out our vaccines in the EU. “

EU leaders had asked the committee at their summit last week to propose a common framework for rapid antigen testing and for the mutual recognition of test results.

“We need to scale up the testing volume to keep the virus under control,” Kyriakides said. “That’s why we signed an agreement with Roche and Abbott to support the Member States with more than 20 million rapid tests.”
