Biden Elects Transgender As Deputy Minister of Health
US president-to-be Joe Biden has put Rachel Levine forward as Deputy Secretary of Health.
If the Senate permitted the nomination, she would become the first openly transgender person to hold office in a federal government.
Levine (64) is currently leading the fight against the coronavirus in the state of Pennsylvania as a minister. She also teaches paediatrics and psychiatry.
Biden says diversity in his team is of paramount importance.
He calls Levine very qualified for the job. She will serve under the Latino Xavier Becerra, who becomes Minister of Health.
