Amazon no longer provides cloud services to Israeli company NSO. The American tech company has informed various media after it became known that governments of multiple countries, including activists, business people and journalists, were listening through services of NSO.

NSO makes spyware that takes advantage of vulnerabilities in the software on which mobile phones run. Sold to select governments and law enforcement agencies, the Pegasus program can hack into cell phones and secretly record emails, calls, and text messages via a link.

In some cases, it can activate itself without the victim clicking the link, The Washington Post and media partners such as The Guardian, Le Monde, and Süddeutsche Zeitung previously wrote.

Meanwhile, 50,000 numbers have become known of people who were followed with the spyware. For example, the fiancée of the murdered Saudi columnist Jamal Khashoggi was monitored. Also on the list are more than 180 journalists from news organizations such as CNN, AP, Voice of America, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg News, Le Monde, The Financial Times and Al Jazeera.

NSO states that the investigation is full of errors. The company says it is even considering legal action. The media organizations have announced that they will make more disclosures about NSO in the coming days.
